My first book, Musique Concrète, was published by Bloomsbury in 2026 as part of its popular 33 1/3 imprint.

The book traces the beguiling history of musique concrète, an experimental music genre which ignored melody, meter and even musical instruments. Instead, its practitioners recorded everyday sounds, manipulating the audio into abstract works that felt like they came from an alien world.

While this weird genre was never a popular hit, it opened up a new world of studio techniques, influencing everyone from Frank Zappa to The Who. Its impact even reached The Beatles, inspiring their eight-and-a-half-minute musique concrète extravaganza 'Revolution 9'.

In the book, I tell the stories of the eccentric characters who spearheaded the genre. I also show how their techniques anticipated hip-hop, mashups, plunderphonics and ambient music.
